East - West
By: Ann Corba
Istanbul is one the few cities who played in important role in some major historical events. The heart of the ancient Byzantium, now Istanbul is the main Turkish port, country’s industrial, commercial, educational and financial center. It’s the only city in the world situated in two continents – Europe and Asia.
The story of Istanbul foundation is fanned with legends – some say that the ancient Greek gods were involved in it – Io, escaping from Zeus found a shelter here and thus the city was established. The story that looks a little closer to reality affirms that originally it was just another Greek sea port. Then it bore a name of Byzantii. In 73 AD the city pass to the Romans, but when the Roman Empire broke up it gained its independence and later became a capital of Byzantium and changed its name to Constantinople (in honor of the emperor Constantine).
After the split of the Christianity church Constantinople became the center of Orthodox branch, while Rome remained the center of Catholicism. Arabs tried to conquer Constantinople for ages, but succeeded only in XV century. After it the city received its present name – Istanbul.
A sticking point between Christians and Muslims, Istanbul combines the best of two worlds, but now however looks more like typical orient city with mosques and bazaars. Istanbul is crossed by Bosporus strait, which separates city into European and Asian parts.
The European part of Istanbul is divided into Old and New city. New part is deprived of the historical sights and mostly attracts tourists with its clubs, restaurants and nightlife. Istanbul is a very big city inhabited by 13 millions! Unlike the most of metropolises with its skyscrapers, in Istanbul typical urban landscape dominate small three of four storey buildings mainly situated along Bosporus strait.
When you come to Istanbul it would be unwise to miss the chance to get acquainted with its rich historical and cultural heritage. The most of the ancient monuments are concentrated in the Old city – Sophia Cathedral, Blue Mosque, Theodosius wall, Topkapi palace and others. Asian part of the city also can boast some remarkable places – Anadolu fortress, Beylerbeyi palace, Kucuksu Kasri, Hidiv Kasri, Leanders tower and Cinili mosque should be on the top of your list.
