Have You Always Wanted to Travel for Fun?

Monday, October 31, 2005

By Denise Michaels

Over the last five years I've travelled plenty for business. I've lugged bags through airports and put up with the security issues that have become de riguer when travelling in the post 9/11 world. Business travel is okay but having a flight be four hours late knowing that I'm missing a critical meeting or deadline because I'm sitting on a plane is no fun at all.

I want to travel to faraway destinations. They don't have to be THAT far away. I don't even have to fly to get there. This holiday season between Christmas and New Years Eve I'd be thrilled to spend a few blissful days at a cozy mountain cabin with a stone fireplace, a cup of hot cocoa, fragrant pines outside the window, soft snowflakes lazily floating down and a few well-chosen books I've been dying to read.

Ernie and I will probably visit Mexico again soon. We love the south of the border culture, the music, the architecture, the food and the graciousness of the people. Now, if I could only spend a little more time brushing up on my Spanish.

Of course flying is generally the easiest way to get to your destination if you're more than a half a day away.

If you haven't had the opportunity to do a lot of travel in your lifetime - now that you're over 40 it's time to start seeing the world. It's time to start doing a few adventurous things for you. Discover the fun of making your travel fantasy come true. Enjoy that second honeymoon with the man you love overlooking the ocean sky at night from your hotel room balcony with sultry, warm breezes, a star-kissed sky and a champagne toast. If you don't deserve it - who does?

This space is also for the woman who travels alone. Yes, it's safe for women to venture alone in America and many countries abroad - but not everywhere. In some ports of call it's still a man's world. Unless you're on a spiritual pilgrammage or want to spend a week finishing your novel in a Caribbean timeshare it's more fun to share the journey with a friend.

Consider travelling with a trusted girlfriend or a family member you enjoy spending time with. You can save on packages, domestic and abroad by traveling together. Even without a package you can save on hotel rooms simply by sharing. That's a fifty percent discount. I travelled with a girlfriend when I went to Paris the week before Christmas several years ago. We had a super time running from one sight to the other and visiting some of the famous museums as well as the Eiffel Tower.

Whichever you choose - bon voyage!
